BlackBerry Storm Price Drops to $50 at Verizon Wireless
Yes, its a good day folks. The pricing for the first touch-screen BlackBerry smartphone, which debuted last November at Verizon Wireless, is now at $50 ... or rather $49.99 to be exact. A few months ago, Verizon Wireless started promotions of buy one get one free on the BlackBerry Storm and other BlackBerry smartphones and recently had dropped the price of all phones to $99.
Whether the wireless carrier is trying to attract more wireless users to its network or is trying to clear out inventory for new and upcoming models expected later this year, like the BlackBerry Storm 2, for example, is still a mystery. Whatever the reason, its all good news for consumers. However, I caution you. The BlackBerry Storm has had its fair share of bugs and regardless of the numerous software updates, the device is still not as great as it should be.
My advice would be to take a good look at your wallet. If $50 is all that you can afford and are willing to put up with some minor headaches then go for the current version of the BlackBerry Storm. However, if you can manage to hold out until October or so, then you might just be able to get your hands on the new and improved BlackBerry Storm 2.
The RIM BlackBerry Storm smartphone is now officially priced under $100 at Verizon Wireless and is competing toe to toe with the iPhone 3G, which is also an equally-priced, older touch screen model available at AT&T. That can only mean one thing. RIM and Verizon Wireless are getting ready to launch the BlackBerry Storm 2 soon!
While I certainly recommed to AT&T customers who have never had an iPhone before that getting the iPhone 3G model at the $99 price point is a good idea if you just cant manage to spend the extra $100 to get the latest iPhone 3Gs model, I send a strong warning out that if you are considering the BlackBerry Storm current model then you should wait it out till the fall for the newer version. The price will be higher most like at $199 as well, but it will be well worth it since the bugs will have been worked out hopefully and improvements in touch screen technology as well as WiFi are welcome additions.
BlackBerry Storm 2 to come with Wi-Fi
Word on the street is that BlackBerry Storm 2 will not only be a revamped version of the current Storm device, but it will also come with Wi-Fi and probably a brand new screen. Obviously, this is a smart move, and probably a much needed improvement by RIM, because a smartphone with the calibre of Storm doesn’t feel complete without basic communication features like Wi-Fi.
Moreover, with loads of impressive smartphones around, it is high time that RIM planned to launch a 5 mega pixel camera powered BlackBerry device in the market, and they are of course hoping that BlackBerry Storm 2 is going to be the hot choice come holiday shopping season.
Moreover, with Palm Pre and iPhone 3GS brining out so many promising features into the smartphone arena, Blackberry must come up with nothing less than a stellar product. And definitely something better – and we’re guessing that it would be the brand new screen, and few other secret goodies under the hood that may help the BlackBerry Storm 2 conquer the market.
In any case, Wi-Fi and a powerful camera are the top most things on the cards of RIM, and probably a revamp in design as well as the screen may be seen in the BlackBerry Storm 2 too. I can’t wait!
BlackBerry Storm 2 coming in October?
The Blackberry Storm 2 rumors are at an all time high, and one of RIM’s co-CEOs has officially confirmed that the next generation Storm is indeed in the making, though he did not give out any details regarding the release date of the rumoured Storm 2.
As the current BlackBerry Storm model has badly failed in almost every aspect to outsmart the Apple’s legendary iPhone 3G, and now that the iPhone 3GS has been rolled out into the market, Blackberry has no other option than keeping pace with them.
So, everyone’s expecting the Storm 2 to hit the market within next 3-4months, probably somewhere around the month of October, right before holiday sales start up. However, nobody really knows what’s happening inside Research In Motion’s R&D labs, though various crappy images of the Storm2 have been leaked none of them have been confirmed by Blackberry or RIM.
The current Storm is almost a joke without WiFi, not to mention its awkward SurePress click-screen and stands nowhere close to the iPhone 3GS, so you can DEFINITELY expect to see WiFi, an improved camera and a second-generation TruePress touchscreen in the Storm 2.
Lastly, you may also expect a better pricing than the iPhone 3GS, but the other improvements are still a mystery. Let us wait and watch what RIM finally comes out with, but don’t bet your money on its release, as Blackberry has never been able to keep up their promises in recent times.
BlackBerry Storm 2 coming soon
While the BlackBerry Storm 2 cant come fast enough for some of you out there fed up with the original BlackBerry Storm device released last November on Verizon Wireless, youre going to be happy to know that the new Storm is going to be most likely arriving in October.
We had previously reported that the touch screen smartphone would be launched this month but now it seems that it is going to be later in the year. Could it be due to the fact that this summer is turning out to be very heated with major handsets launching almost simultaneously? I am not sure about that but I hope the real reason the BlackBerry Storm 2 is not launching now and will be coming out later on in this year will be because RIM and Verizon are running the device through proper testing something that the original Storm obviously didnt get enough of so that customers will be happy once they get it in their hands instead of regretting their decision on getting a touch screen BlackBerry.
Many Verizon Wireless customers feel shortchanged and have had a long list of complaints about BlackBerrys first touchscreen smartphone pretty much since the time it launched last November. While, RIM and Verizon have worked hard in the last 7 months to send out software updates to try and take care of bugs in the system, problems still prevail.
By the way, theres a good chance that the new Storm will look and feel similar to the current model but will be more powerful and better functionalities. Stay tuned for more details...

BlackBerry Storm OS update – in comes the 4.7.0.148 patch at last!
Finally BlackBerry users were provided with the long-awaited 4.7.0.148 patch, which could fix most of the existing problems in the Blackberry Storm. So, let’s look at some of the noticeable outcomes of the application of this patch on to the device.
Firstly, the capability to make use of full QWERTY keyboard even in portrait mode has been improvised, and the camera menu has become transparent, which has also resulted in a faster camera operation too.
However, even useless things like the new ‘Phone’ icon have been included as a part of the update, which don’t really serve any purpose. In this case, one could easily tap ‘send’ button to use phone, rather than clicking on this new icon, which replaced the older “Call Log” icon.
While you’re surfing the net, with the help of a web browser, then a green-glowing “Go” button can be seen in replace of the “Enter” button. Apart from these noticeable improvements, there are several other betterments in the performance, and the 4.7.0.148 patch has almost succeeded in taking care of the existing bugs.
As RIM and Verizon are still busy testing for any left out bugs, the chances are high that somebody or the other will discover a few at least, nevertheless the overall dissatisfaction of the Storm users has been almost taken care of. And, this surely means a whole lot of relief for RIM too.
Does RIM Feel Threatened By Palm Pre Launch?
In the next few months four new smartphones are expected to rock the market. The Palm Pre, Blackberry Storm 2, Samsung Android, and the next gen iPhone 3.0 are going to be launched this summer. There are a lot of rumors making a buzz about the competition between the four smartphones. Now the question is which one of them is going to sway the market off its feet?
Rumors suggest that the new Palm Pre is a killer competition for the current Blackberry Storm and iPhone. The Blackberry Storm has not been able to fit a physical keyboard with the touch-screen unlike other smartphones like Palm Pre. The Palm Pre is supposed to decrease the extensive use of the Stylus by introducing QWERTY in their models.
However, some sources suggest that the touch screen capabilities have been merged with the physical keyboard in Blackberry Storm 2. The Blackberry Storm 2 leaked photos have allegedly started surfacing on the internet. The only difference is that the last four buttons at the bottom on the Blackberry Storm are made as a part of the touch screen.
Palm Pre has an accelerate feature which adapts well in landscape and portrayal mode. Blackberry Storm does allow its users to use this exclusive feature.
Blackberry Storm 2 is going to be introduced in the market with 3.2 mega pixel camera instead of the much talked about 5 mega pixel cameras which has been the biggest disappointment.
Now the real question is how much does RIM feel threatened by the Palm Pre. I’m sure come launch day, RIM management will be keeping a close watch on the press and preliminary sales figures. Since day 1 at CES the Pre has been seriously hyped and has been coined as the most anticipated device of the year. Regardless of what happens, RIM shouldn’t worry at the end of the day because all this boils down to the fact that the smartphone market is expanding overall and taking market share from the regular, run of the mill cellphones.
Indeed the market trend is looking promising for the Palm Pre.
BlackBerry SurePress here to stay
In a rather interesting turn of events, Mike Lazardis, CEO of RIM said at the recent D7 conference that and I quote: "...SurePress is here to stay." SurePress is the technology that powers the BlackBerry Storm, RIMs device designed to take on the iPhone head on. Basically it allows for a "clickable" touch screen, a feature most seem to utterly love or completely hate more seem to fall into the latter category, but overall the Storm has proven to be a fairly good seller, regardless of the buggy nature of the device. Whats odd though is that from all reports about the second generation Storm, it does not actually include the technology at all. Its possible that these reports are perhaps mistaken and they simply received prototype devices, but that seems rather unlikely at this point. Regardless, love it or hate it, its apparently here to stay.
Personally, I think its a very innovative idea, I just wish that the first device it was in had been better executed. I really believe that RIM should give customers a right to choose though, perhaps offering a SurePress and a regular touchscreen interface for their upcoming BlackBerry touchscreen devices.
