Using Your iPod As A Storage Drive
Combining a data card and a music gadget is what many of you would have wanted. Yes, it is possible that your iPod can be used as a hard drive or flash drive to store and transfer data files. Conveniently carry your files and music on one device. Combine work and play.
For transferring music files to iPod use iTunes but you will not be able to see the songs iTunes copies to your iPod.
Follow these steps to use iPod as a hard drive. Connect your iPod to your computer, open iTunes and select iPod icon in the source pane. Click on the summary tab and select “enable disk use” or “manually manage songs and videos”. For automatically updating your iPod with the iTunes library select “Enable disk use”.
If you have the iPod shuffle, click on “enable disk use” checkbox and set the Storage Allocation slider to show the amount you require for audio files and the amount you want to be used for data files.
The iPod disk icon appears on desktop and in Finder window and My Computer/Computer in Windows. Double click on icon and drag files to or from iPod window to copy them. Be careful to eject iPod first before disconnecting it from your computer.
Apple Video Camera Shown Off At Press Event Today
Apple knows video content is where its at... people are uploading to YouTube tons of videos daily and Steve Jobs wants in on a piece of that action. At the press event held by Apple today, Steve Jobs, back from his surgery and looking thin but in better shape then the last time we saw him. He introduced the new iPod Nano with in-built video and mic. Ouch! If I were the folks making Flip Minos, I would start making plan B. Jobs is planning direct competition with these folks.
Highlights from Apple\'s Press Event 9/9/09
Well, its come and gone. The anticipated 9/9/09 event from Apple did not reveal an Apple Tablet nor any new “designs” in any of the iPods, but there are some lower prices and new features. No camera for the iPod Touch nor any WiFi but the slim and sleek new iPod Nano gets a video/camera. Steve Jobs knows that people love to shoot video and the Flip Mino was starting to see some good sales out of their pocketable video recording device. So, Apple wanted in on the action and thought that the Nano was the best way to go about getting this done.
Lots of people are indeed upset that the iPod Touch did not get any such upgrades, but let me remind you that right now they are treading thin ice. If they put a camera/video recorder on the Touch then they will have to put a speaker/mic and that means that Google Voice, Skype, and the likes will be usable on the Touch, bypassing wireless carriers and the need for any type of conventional wireless plan. We cant have that can we? It would open up a whole new can of worms for Apple and AT&T.
Anyway, getting back to the event, heres the highlights of the new pricing and structure oh, and it was good to see Steve Jobs back on stage!:
iPod Nano comes in 9 colors polished anodized aluminum and will have camera/video recording capability. There are two models. 8GB for $149 and 16GB for $179. They’re available today. Oh yea, and FM radio finally comes to iPod too with this new device.
iPod Shuffle, the worlds smallest MP3 player now is priced at $59 for 2GB and $79 for 4GB and comes in 4 colors. Also, a special edition for $99 made of polished steel.
iPod Classic. Before today, there was a 120GB version for $249. They’re going to raise the size to 160GB for the same $249 so you have room for more songs and content.
iPod Touch. The price for entry level 8GB has been lowered to $199 with the 32GB coming in at $299 and a 64GB at $399.
Rumored Leaked iPod Pictures Real?
The rumor mill has been hard at work again, and the folks at Apple havent been stepping up to clear the air. Leaked pictures have surfaced of both the new iPod nano and the iPod Touch. There are believers and naysayers aplenty but according to a few sources thenew iPod nano is real. Based on a lot of the pictures Ive stumbled upon show the new nano as a very sleek streamline design with an added screen. I believe if this the new iPod the added screen is a welcome addition.
The rumored iPod touch is said to be not only an all touch devise but also to have a camera which is video enabled. This could be hazardous to the iPhone if the iPod has a mic. Because calls could be made via Google talk or Skype. I dont believe that the folks at Apple would stand for that but the rumor has been circulating. There are many different versions of the supposed iPod Touch Im partial to the full screen model but I think it would be cool to have a camera on a new version. Either way Apple has yet to come out with an official statement, which has helped to create a buzz for any new apple product they may release soon. So sorry for all who may want to know before hand, but it looks like well all be holding our breathes in anticipation.
Next iPhone for Free?
Chris Andersons latest book, Free, has got me thinking about how his theories might apply to the mobile wireless industry. While Anderson claims that digital businesses will gain by offering products for free, I have to wonder if that isnt so far off in our industry either.
More than once I have thought in the back of my mind that in the future phones really will be given away for totally free - and I mean the really nice ones like iPhones, BlackBerrys, and the Palm Pres of the world. In fact every single phone will be for free. The reason is because of all the content that people will access using their smartphone will severely outweigh the cost of manufacturing the product itself.
Wireless carriers will continue to make money from all the network usage and data-heavy monthly plans so they will support the free phone concept. On the flip side manufacturers, like Apple, will make money from supporting & being a pass-through for content ie, Apple App Store & iTunes Store. No doubt, it will be a survival of the fittest for manufacturers. Apple is currently leaps and bounds ahead in this market as I have previously noted.
So does this mean that the next iPhone is going to be given away for free? I wouldnt be surprised. Since the launch of the iPod & iPhone, mega industries have spawned for content and mobile applications. Someone is benefitting from that ...namely Apple at the moment and that will eventually change in the future with developers getting their share too. But the point is that all content is going digital and people have to access it from a digital device. Whatever will be the cheapest method for them to access data will win. And if there is a free offering, then why not?

Apple Previews Developer Beta of iPhone OS 3.0
Beta release provides new SDK, Over 1,000 APIs & 100 new features
CUPERTINO, California—March 17, 2009—Apple® today previewed its iPhone™ OS 3.0 software and announced the immediate availability of a beta software release to registered developers. The iPhone OS 3.0 beta release includes an updated Software Development Kit SDK with over 1,000 new Application Programming Interfaces APIs including In-App Purchases; Peer-to-Peer connections; an app interface for accessories; access to the iPod® music library; a new Maps API and Push Notifications. Apple also announced over 100 new features that will be available to iPhone and iPod touch users this summer including cut, copy and paste; MMS;* landscape view for Mail, Text and Notes; stereo Bluetooth; syncing Notes to the Mac® and PC; shake to shuffle; parental controls for TV shows, movies and apps from the App Store; and automatic login at Wi-Fi hot spots. The iPhone OS 3.0 beta release will also include a new Voice Memo app and expanded search capability for all key iPhone apps, as well as Spotlight™ search across the iPhone or iPod touch.
“The new iPhone OS 3.0 is a major software release packed with incredible new features and innovations for iPhone customers and developers alike. It will keep us years ahead of the competition,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
The iPhone OS 3.0 beta software and SDK include over 1,000 new APIs and are available today for all iPhone Developer Program members to use for development and testing of their apps for iPhone and iPod touch. In-App Purchases will allow developers to offer subscription content and provide the ability to sell new content and features in a simple and secure process. Another key developer feature in the iPhone OS 3.0 beta software is the ability for apps to interface with hardware accessories, creating a whole new element of control for iPhone and iPod touch accessory developers as well as a new ecosystem of solutions for customers. Developers will also be able to use Apple’s new Maps API to integrate Google Mobile Maps services within their apps which will offer Google Map tiles, current location, custom annotations and geocoding. The iPhone OS 3.0 beta software includes the Apple Push Notification service which provides developers with a mechanism to alert users with sounds, text or a badge.
The new iPhone OS 3.0 software will be available to iPhone and iPod touch users this summer with over 100 new features including cut, copy and paste which can be done within or across applications; MMS to send and receive photos, contacts, audio files and locations with the Messages app; and the ability to capture and send audio recordings on the go with the new Voice Memo app. Landscape view will be available for Mail, Text and Notes. Search capabilities will be expanded, allowing customers to search within Mail, iPod and Notes or search across all key apps by typing a key word or phrase into the new Spotlight search, conveniently accessed from the Home screen.
The updated Stock app will add the ability to display recent company news and current trading information like opening or average price, trading volume or Market Cap, and will offer a landscape view to see a full screen of any stock chart. Customers will also be able to view shared calendars right on their iPhone with CalDAV support and sync their calendars with iCal®, Yahoo, Google and Oracle.
Today, the groundbreaking App Store has more than 25,000 applications available to consumers, and 15 more countries have been added so the App Store is now available in 77 countries, allowing developers to reach more than 30 million iPhone and iPod touch users around the world. Developers set the price for their applications and retain 70 percent of all sales revenue. Apple covers all credit card, web hosting and infrastructure costs associated with offering applications on the App Store.

A new iPhone for this summer?
Just when those rumors of a new iPhone have died down, earlier this week they were started again when Emirates Business 24/7 reported that
Etisalat would carry that iPhone in the United Arab Emirates, and also suggested that the next version of the iPhone will be launched in June.
Of course, this doesnt make it clear whether we are talking about an updated version of the existing model or the hotly rumored iPhone nano... but one thing is for certain. The last 2 summers Apple has rolled out an iPhone. And now people are waiting on the edge of their seats to see if June 2009 will be any different than the ones before.
