Motorola Aura, a designer luxury phone, is expected to launch this year as well and will satisfy the palate of the rich and influential. The mirror polish on the screen gives a shiny finish along with the aluminum keypad. The Aura has a swivel mechanism with 130 Swiss precision ball bearings, it seems.
Palm Treo Pro, Nokia Corolla, LG Renoir, ASUS P565, and Pearl Flip are the other much awaited phones, some of which have reached western shores already.
3G will launch the next generation of mobile services in India, say analysts. 3G auctions will be completed this year, the government promises.
With 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity on mobile handsets, mobile subscribers too can make IP calls. WiMAX has also made inroads here. Hopes are high for better bandwidth for accessing the net on mobiles and also for education, e-governance, healthcare etc. WiMAX device manufacturers are ready with their devices.
To sum up… very exciting and interesting phase in the Indian Mobile Phone Industry.

Nokia has continued to show a strong presence in the Bluetooth arena in the last couple of years and this year is no exception. The BH-904 Bluetooth headset was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this week.

So, with the market already saturated with great looking bluetooth headsets what sets this one apart?
Well, it seems that the headset is smart enough to recognize the users voice from background sounds and noise, helping to improve voice quality. Plus, it will allow you to connect 2 different devices to it simultaneously thanks to its multipoint technology feature. The headset itself measures 2 inches by 0.8 inch by 0.4 inch and weighs less than ounce. Talk about lightweight! More details: 8 hours talk time and up to 160 hours in standby.
The price nor the exact release date has been given out by Nokia.

2009 is just around the corner and what a year its going to be! Nokia has just announced the N97, with a 3.5" touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera and 32GB of memory. And thats just to start things off...
Coming in Spring of 2009, the N97 features a full QWERTY keyboard that is hidden behind the phones large touchscreen. People are saying that this might be indeed an iPhone killer. What do you say?
One thing is for sure, that 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and dual LED flash is to die for. Plus, what the iPhone has failed to do with video, the N97 can shoot & capture video in DVD quality in 16:9 aspect ratio. How awesome is that? Plus the 32GB inbuilt memory is double that of the largest 16GB iPhone size.
Other features such as built in WiFi, 3G speed, inbuilt GPS, and this baby is built for social networking too. Finally, not to leave out the OS information, heres the scoop: it runs on Symbian S50 5th Edition and brings the familiar interface from soon to be released 5800 Express Music.
Priced at $700 without carrier subsidies, I wonder which carrier is going to take this one on....

Some of you might remember the piece I wrote on Nokia a few months ago. Well fast forward to the end of 2008 can you believe the year has gone so fast? and the fact that Nokia just announced its going to ramp up R&D for US market. Well, its about time people. What were you waiting for before?
See, thats what I cant understand about Nokia. They are a great company, hailing from a great country, but no common sense. Sure, it doesnt make sense for a foreign company to get into the US wireless handset market - the population just isnt there, say in an emerging market like India for example. However, Americans do have a lust for great wireless devices just like anyone else, and above all we prize gadgets that will help us to do it all.
Thats why the smartphone market is growing here everyday. So when I came across this interview with Nokia chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo during his recent trip to Boston, I almost fell over in my seat.
Sadly, Nokia only has 6% of the US cell phone market which isnt a lot considering their marketshare in the rest of the world. In addition, they have the Symbian OS which has been open source and a great alternative to Windows Mobile, I might add, for a long time.
So, what gives? Why have they not been able to surpass and do what Apple or RIM BlackBerry have been able to do? Nokia is an excellent example of how great devices and great technology dont equal to success. After all is said and done, the great devices need to get into the hands of the masses and thats what Nokia lacks. Otherwise the devices are completely useless.
I hope for all of our sakes that Nokias new efforts will be fruitful and will result in some great new devices for all of us here in the US. Ill be on the lookout.

As if the the name doesnt say it all, the Nokia 5800, previously code-named Tube, comes with music. That is, the phone comes with an available service named Comes With Music. This service gives you unlimited downloading access to millions of songs for free for the first year. After that year all the music downloaded is yours to keep. Top record labels like Universal and Sony BMG are a part of this program, so you know the music is good.
For the musically intelligent people out there, this is a dream phone. I hear, listen, talk and even breathe music, but I also wouldnt want to live without a touchscreen. Well aside from an awesome music service, this phone apparently has an incredible touchscreen, 3.2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, and other features that bring it up to par to say the least.
So, how many songs can be downloaded in a year? Just think of having this phone...you could be rocking out to the latest tunes on one cool new device. Also not to forget, that not only does this phone play your favorite music its also likely to be with you 24/7. So if you are ever out there stranded on a deserted island, hey, at least youll have your music player, cellphone, and 3.2 megapixel camera to keep you company!

The Nokia 888 concept phone is just too cool for words. I know its a concept phone and it will take some time to reach market if it ever does! but I can dream cant I?
Nokia specs for this phone boast of some amazing features including the fact that the phone uses a liquid battery and a flexible touch screen to take this beyond just a phone. The concept is really that it is more than a phone. It is your lifeline.
Nokia has always done extensive research in figuring out peoples needs for a phone - they really know what people want. Right now, the company rules as the #1 handset maker for 70% of the worlds phones.
Kudos to Nokia and their research and concept teams for thinking beyond the box and coloring outside the lines.

Is there some strange connection between recessionary economies and an increase in demand for smartphones? Well, one could argue that there is indeed such a connection when taking the case of Japan. Japan has been in a recession for years, yet the demand for smart mobile devices has continued to increase, as Japanese have lusted for the next smart device.
Japanese love their smartphones and are known for intensely using them to do pretty much everything - from regularly accessing the internet to making purchases and even buying their train tickets. There are even phones that have built-in mirror screens so youll never have to search for a mirror again to check out your face!
In light of Japans trend of an increased demand for smartphones during recession, I take a look at the US economy today, which seems on the verge of a recession. Simultaneously, more than ever Americans are demanding that their phone be a smartphone, just like their Japanese counterparts.
2008 clearly has been a major coming-out party for smartphones in the US and they have exploded onto the scene in new and exciting ways that were unimaginable to most of us at this time last year. Now, in the 4th quarter, we are days away from many great devices that will be coming out including:
G1 Android phone
RIM BlackBerrys Bold, Pearl Flip, Thunder, & Storm
Nokia Tube
and possibly one other Android based device.
And this is after the much-anticipated Palm Treo Pro and Apple iPhone 3G successful launches earlier this year. So, it turns out that recession can be a good thing after all, at least for the smartphone industry.
