Overview: Clear-Coat is a thin film type skin, it offers great protection against cuts and scrapes for your Palm Pre, but can it hold up?

Durability: Well, being a case for the Palm Pre it has to be durable and it certainly is in a few areas. The case is basically a very thin layer polymer that can soak up a lot of damage. You can stretch it out pretty far, but that won't be an issue when it's actually attached to your Pre (unless you do it wrong). It does have amazing protection against friction damage though. We tested ours out with a pair of scissors, and the official site rubs theirs against a concrete ledge; and both Palm Pre smartphones came out without a scratch at the expense of the skin. The skin does show severe damage, but typical wear and tear should go by without too much of a problem.

The downside is, being a thin skin, it offers no real shock dampening protection. So drops and the like can still cause cracks and heavy internal damage to your Palm Pre, even if the case does prevent the nicks and cuts sustained in such incidents. You can double this case up with a more regular one if you want a permanent thin layer combined with a thick outer layer for added protection for your Pre.

Design/Functionality: The skin looks great, although you may not even notice it depending on the device. It's fantastic on touch screens especially, and has a very good feel, albeit a bit slick. It isn't as difficult to apply as some competitors, but if you want to be safe and do it right you won't be able to use the Palm Pre for several hours (since it uses a liquid and needs some time to set) even if the actual application process only takes a few minutes.

As an added bonus, Clear-Coat supports the product with a great replacement policy and guarantee, so even if you manage to apply it incorrectly or beat it up, you can get it replaced at a significantly reduced price of $3.95.

Conclusion: This clear skin is great protection against scrapes and scratches and is good in your pockets, just watch out for the corners.
