Fommy Product Review:
Overview: This is OtterBoxs original series of cases that has been more recently phased out a bit in lieu of more regular consumer-friendly models. These cases are big, bulky, but above all else, tough. They are meant to withstand some severe punishment and keep on going.
Durability: It wouldnt be much of an OtterBox case if it wasnt built tough. The case is made of extremely thick, durable plastic at a quarter of an inch, and the interior has foam guides inside which help the phone stay in place while also acting as shock dampeners.
The outside of the case is mostly coated with thick rubber, reinforcing the case and absorbing shock that wont damage the rest of the case or your phone. The two most likely spots to get damaged here are the keyboard cover and the screen cover. The keyboard area is probably the thinnest part of the exterior, and I would imagine a direct blow would pierce it given enough force. But it is reinforced a bit by the keyboard adapter which would probably prevent any damage your phone might receive even if the case was damaged. This weakness is a bit of a necessity though, any thicker and the keyboard would probably be almost completely inoperable.
The other part of the screen protector. There is a thin plastic window on a hinge and then a soft screen protector under it. The latter would be fairly vulnerable to a lot of damage, sharp objects especially, but I think the exterior door could stand to be a bit thicker as well for maximum protection. Im at a bit of a loss why it isnt thicker already considering that there appears to be ample amount of room in that area of the design.
Design/Functionality: Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how much of the functionality of the design remains in light of the large and overbearing nature of the case. The keyboard isnt terribly difficult to use, but does take some getting used to and the touch screen protector remains surprisingly responsive. The biggest one to suffer is the side controls. The rubberized protector could be a bit better molded, as they currently require a lot more force than I believe necessary to operate them. Worse, the top buttons are completely unusable inside the case. Otherwise, all the ports and controls are accessible and easily usable while being protected by permanently attached rubber cut-outs.
Additionally, you can replace the back locking protector with one you can attach a belt clip with (both included), but you may find it a bit uncomfortable at your side considering its dimensions.
Overall, the function of this case is durability and protection, and I can find no significant fault in either of these functions. It is both extremely tough and durable, even if it could be improved upon. I should warn you though, this case is not for the feint of heart, it is big (and I mean big) and quite bulky, it isnt particularly heavy though, which makes up for it a little.
Conclusion: If youre looking for amazing protection, but dont mind the cost of a bit of usability and a lot of size, this is a great choice.
